Forestry maintains top spot in ag farm income

With virtually every parish in the state contributing at least something to the total, forestry continues as the leading agricultural crop in Louisiana, according to the 2009 “Louisiana Report,” issued annually by the LSU AgCenter.
Concentrated primarily in the northern and western Louisiana parishes, forestry harvest income totaled $731,395,785, to lead all plant enterprises. Economic activity involved in growing, harvesting, and manufacturing forest products is estimated in excess of $4 billion annually.

While more concentrated, primarily in the north and central Louisiana timber parishes, poultry adds another $480,802,841 to farm income in the region—not counting other economic activity generated from growing and processing.
Of farm-based plant enterprises, sugarcane ranks first at $446,973,544, followed by rice, soybeans, feed grains, and cotton. (See chart for detailed breakdown.)

Horses top the animal enterprises at $521,961,000, followed by poultry, cattle and calves, and dairy cattle.
All agricultural enterprises in Louisiana for 2009 yielded farm income of $4.85 billion.
