Alternate hog bays held

While the annual Uncle Earl's Hog Dog Trials, scheduled in Winnfield last month, remained cancelled for the current year, two other hog dog bay events were scheduled held the area.

The cancellation of Uncle Earl's and scheduling of the alternate events each occurred between the monthly publication deadlines of The Piney Woods Journal so that advance announcements were not possible

One event is the Big Spring Bay at Calvin, in Winn Parish near Winnfield, put together by James Haymon and Joe Hines of Winnfield. Bleachers, lights, and other facilities have been added to the Double H bay pen in the Calvin area, and trophies were to be awarded to winners, according to Haymon. As many as 125 to 130 dogs were expected.

Another hog dog bay event was scheduled on the same weekend at Fort Bayou Ranch at Van Cleave, Mississippi. Details of that event were not known.

Claude L. O'Bryan of Winnfield and Mrs. Sharon Young of Hall Summit in Red River Parish each confirmed that the Uncle Earl's is off at least for this year. Mr. O'Bryan is one of the original organizers of the Uncle Earl's. Mrs. Young and her husband Jimmy, publishers of the hog dog magazine "Bayed Solid," were involved in recent versions of the Uncle Earl's show. Internal disagreements over policy and activities at the Uncle Earl's caused the principals to call off the event. Neither side expressed opinions on whether Uncle Earl's would resume.

Sponsors of the alternative event at Calvin indicated they were considering whether to continue with an annual replacement show.
