| Dan Utley will
head ET Historical Association Dan Utley of Austin, chief historian for history programs division at the Texas Historical Commission, will serve as president of the East Texas Historical Association for 2006-2007. Utley, a former resident of Lufkin and Woodville, was elected at the Association's recent fall meeting in Nacogdoches. Also elected were Beverly Rowe of Texarkana, first vice president; Ted Lawe of Dallas second vice president; and John Oglesbee of San Augustine, Ken Howell of College Station, and Caroline Castillo Crimm of Huntsville, directors. James Wilkins of Tyler received the Bob and Doris Bowman Best of East Texas Award, which honors an individual for contributions to local history. Dr. Linda Hudson of Carthage was elected one of 25 Fellows of the association. She is the author of "Mistress of Manifest Destiny: A Biography of Jane McManus Storm Cazneau, 1807-1878." Dr. Jeffery Owens, a professor at Tyler Junior College, was named the Ottis Lock Educator of the Year. Ottis Lock Research Grants went to Linda Hudson, Susannah U. Bruce of Huntsville; and Kenneth E. Hendrickson, Jr. of Wichita Falls. Hudson will research "Slave Cases in the Texas Supreme Court," Bruce's research subject is "Hood's Texans: A History of the Texas Brigade and Southern Society in the American Civil War," and Hendrickson, will research "George Washington Armstrong: Legacy of Hate." Charles H. Russell received the Ottis Lock Book Award for his book, "Undaunted: A Norwegian Woman in Frontier Texas." The Lock awards honor the life and work of Ottis Lock of Angelina County, a former educator, legislator, state official and businessman. The association awarded its C.K. Chamberlain Award for the best article published in the East Texas Historical Journal to Mary L. Wilson of Tarrant County Junior College in Fort Worth for her article Entitled "Profiles in Evasion: Civil War Substitutes and the Men Who Hired Them in Walker's Texas Division." The award honors Dr. C.K. Chamberlain, former chairman of the Department of History at Stephen F. Austin State University and founding editor of the Journal. |
