scholarship endowed The Commander Bertrand Dean scholarship has been established by the Louisiana Forestry Foundation to assist forestry students at Louisiana Tech University at Ruston, and Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge. The $1,000 scholarship was endowed by his widow, Mary Dean, in her will which became effective this year after her death. Dean was a resident of the Farmerville area where his family had timberland. The Deans were longtime associates of the Louisiana Forestry Association. "With the help of forest manager Hugh Vick, who is also a member of the board of the Louisiana Forestry Foundation, the Dean timberland was filled to the foundation where a scholarship will be granted annually in perpetuity," said Joe Burns, Foundation president. Applications for the scholarship are made annually through the two state schools of forestry at LSU and Louisiana Tech. Recipients of the scholarship for 2006-2007 are Benjamin Bullock of Monroe, a junior forestry student at LSU, and Matthew Gammell, freshman from Fordyce, Arkansas; Hunter Norman, freshman from St. Joseph; Justin Jacobs, sophomore from Sterlington, and Aaron Wood, junior from Dubach, all attending Louisiana Tech University. The Louisiana Forestry Foundation awards about $30,000 each year, and has presented over $480,000 in scholarships and grants since 1969. The Foundation was established to promote, develop, and advance education in the field of forestry. Gifts of any size and nature are welcomed by the Louisiana Forestry Foundation and named endowments can be arranged. For information call 318-443-2558. |
