Volunteers and exhibitors are gearing up for the 2008 "Forest Family Fun Day & Equipment Show" set to begin at 8 am on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at the Angelina County Expo Center in Lufkin, Texas. Companies from across the United States will be present to show the public the latest in logging, harvesting and transportation equipment and related services. The event is produced by the Texas Forestry Association and the Texas Logging Council.
Thousands of dollars in cash prizes will be awarded in several contests, including the Log Loading Competition, Skidder Driving, Best Looking Log Truck, Best Looking Service Truck, Chain Saw Competition and Truck Driving Skills. Food booths and events for youngsters will be open all day.
A benefit log auction is scheduled and proceeds will be given to the Lufkin State School Wheelchair Fabrication Department and the Texas Forestry Association Educational Fund. In 2006, the log auction drew more than $40,000 for the benefit of charitable organizations. "The log auction is a major part of the Fun Day," said Ron Hufford, Executive Vice President of Texas Forestry Association. "We are very pleased that we have been able to raise money for several years now to help local folks who really need it," he added. At the end of the day, there will be drawings for thousands of dollars in door prizes, including a 4-wheeler. Must be present to win.
With 12 million acres of forested land, the forests of East Texas produce the state's sixth largest agricultural crop (first in East Texas), timber. The forests of Texas also provide 80,000 jobs for Texans and more than 5,000 products they enjoy everyday. "The Forest Family Fun Day is not only for loggers, it should be attended by everyone in the forestry community as well as other folks who want to get out and enjoy a day of fun," Hufford said.
This event will qualify for up to six (6) continuing education hours for professional loggers (check in upon arrival). Admission is free and the public is invited. For more information about exhibiting, competing or attending the show, call Texas Forestry Association at (936) 632-TREE.
Texas Forestry Association is a non-profit trade association representing over 3,200 members who grow, manage, harvest and process forest resources.
