Melancon to oppose Vitter for U.S. Senate in 2010 race Congressman Charlie Melancon, a Democrat from Napoleonville in Assumption Parish, has announced he will oppose David Vitter, a Republican from Metairie, for re-election as U.S. Senator in the voting next year. Melancon is the only Democrat currently serving from Louisiana in the U.S. House of Representatives. In his announcement, Melancon said, "I will work with anyone or stand up to anyone if it's the right thing to do for Louisiana. No matter if you are in Mamou or Monroe, it's not whether it's a Republican idea or a Democratic idea, the only question that matters is, does it make sense for Louisiana." Currently Mary Landrieu, Democrat of New Orleans, is Louisiana's other U.S. Senator. Her seat is not open in the 2010 election. All House members are subject to reelection every two years. Currently serving in the House of Representatives from Louisiana are Republicans Steve Scalise, District 1; Joseph Cao, District 2; John Fleming, District 4; Rodney Alexander, District 5; Bill Cassidy, District 6; and Charles Boustany, District 7. Louisiana is likely to face redistricting prior to the 2010 election, with the possible loss of one of the seven currently serving Representatives. Redistricting is likely to combine most of the present Districts 4 and 5 in North Louisiana into a single District. |
