Forest Queen competes for national title

Heather Leann Barton of Winnfield, winner of the Louisiana Forest Festival Queen title earlier this year, will represent Louisiana at the United States National Forestry Pageant in Tifton, Georgia, on Labor Day weekend, 2006.

She is the daughter of Steve and Cheryl Barton of Winnfield. Her father is a logger, and two of her uncles are foremen on logging jobs, and a cousin is a skidder operator. Her grandfather has been employed at Winn Veneer for several years.

Heather will be a junior at Winnfield High School this year, where she has won public speaking honors in FFA competition, and played softball, track.

Heather said in a written statement, "If I am chosen Miss United States National forestry, I will be making appearances all across the United States helping to promote the forestry industry. I have already begun to study and prepare for the competition so that the people of Winn Parish will be proud of my representation."

Heather says, "Unfortunately, since the location of the competition is in Tilton, Georgia, the travel and accommodations expense is a hurdle that I must overcome to be able to make it to the competition."

She estimates the total expenses, including travel, clothing, lodging, and other expenses, at approximately $1,755, and will accept contributions from local individuals who are willing to help. Donations may be mailed to Heather Leann Barton, 106 Holly Road, Winnfield, LA 71483.
