Late June rainfall aids drought

What was developing as a serious drought in North Louisiana was relieved at the end of June with two straight days of rainfall which brought a total of 6.6 inches to the parched soil.

According to unofficial readings maintained by The Piney Woods Journal at Dodson in northern Winn Parish, total rainfall for the period January through May was only 11.4 inches. The month of June, through the 20th, was the driest, with barely 0.7 inch.

The early morning of Tuesday, June 21, brought the beginning of a day-long downpour, which continued intermittently through the night and into Wednesday, June 22, for a total of 6.6 inches.

Temperatures which had ranged in the upper 90s and above 100 for days on end during May and June moderated, with highs in the low 80s.

Unofficial monthly total rainfall for 2011 was gauged at:
January 4.2; February 1.8; March 1.0; April 2.0; May 2.0; June through the 20th of the month, 0.7.

Two days of rainfall will not overcome the deficit. Continued drought is yet possible, unless weather moderate with normal rainfall over a longer period.
