seedlings The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry is taking pre-orders for its superior tree seedlings grown at state nurseries in DeRidder, Columbia and Monroe. State Forester Wade Dubea said the tree seedlings will be sold through next spring's seedling harvesting process, also called lifting, on a first come, first served basis while supplies last. A variety of pine and hardwood species are available, including loblolly, slash, and longleaf pines, and baldcypress, twelve species of oak, and more than a dozen other species of hardwoods. For the first time ever, the state nurseries will have containerized longleaf pine for $200 per thousand. Advanced generation loblolly seedlings are also available at $42 per thousand bare-root seedlings. Specialty packets include an arboretum packet with 50 assorted and labeled seedlings. This packet includes 16 to 25 different species of trees and costs $30 per packet. Another packet is the wildlife packet for $20. It is comprised of 25 assorted and labeled seedlings with a minimum of five species for wildlife habitat improvement. The species in the wildlife packet are crabapple, sweet pecan, white oak, sawtooth oak and water oak The state nurseries offer 37 species of hardwoods and five of pine. Inventory for the 2009-2010 planting season is expected to number about three million hardwoods and 24 million pines. LDAF began accepting applications on July 1, 2009. Seedlings will be available for pickup on December 15 through March 1. Order applications and payment must be mailed to the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, P.O.
