Historic St.
Maurice Methodist church requests aid for paint,
restoration
Friends of the St. Maurice United Methodist Church, located in Winn Parish, are uniting to raise funds to paint and repair this historic old building. The church is an active United Methodist church, meeting every Sunday, but has an extremely small membership with limited resources to do the necessary repairs. The church was damaged during the two hurricanes last year. The St. Maurice United Church is on the National Historical Register. It was first built in 1874 by John E. Jones as the Old Independence Church. It united with the Methodist Church in 1887, and has been in continuous use over these one hundred thirty-two years. It has played an important part in the history of the St. Maurice Community and Winn Parish. It also has a large, well-kept cemetery that continues to be used and remembered by many families from the area. The St. Maurice United Methodist Church has established a special building fund account at the Bank of Montgomery for the necessary repairs and the scraping, cleaning and painting needed to save this historic old building. Tax deductible donations would be greatly appreciated and may be sent to: St. Maurice United Methodist Church Building Fund The church is located on Hwy. 477 at the crossroads of Hwy 71 in the community of St. Maurice, LA. The Rev. Shawn Hornsby is minister. Services are held each Sunday at 9 AM and all visitors are welcomed. |
