Stuckey honored at Sabine State retirement
Veteran banker recognized by Louisiana Bankers Association for over 50 years service

Carl T. Stuckey of Winnfield was honored with a retirement party Friday, May 21 at the Court Street branch of Sabine State Bank and Trust Co., where he served as a Senior Vice President.

Sabine State Bank Chairman and CEO Jim Cole of Many presented Mr. Stuckey a plaque from the Louisiana Banker's Association, recognizing his service of more than 50 years of banking in Louisiana. Bank staff members, friends, relatives, customers, and members of the local banking community visited during the social hours between 1 and 3 p.m.

Carl Stuckey was born in 1934 at Eros in Jackson Parish, spending his early years in the hard times of the Great Depression. His father died young in 1943, when Carl was nine, and his mother struggled to maintain the family. Carl graduated from Eros High School in 1952, and joined his older brother as a laborer in highline construction, earning 70 cents an hour. He recalls living with a group of other workers in a West Monroe boarding house, where they lived and were served three meals a day for $8.00 per week.

At age 19, he went to work as a runner for Central Bank, at that time one of only two banks in Monroe and West Monroe. Working his way up through the organization, he learned banking by experience. "I didn't know anything about college," he said. Later, he joined United Credit, a finance company, worked in insurance, and then back to banking at American Bank, and finally became president of Sterlington Bank and Trust Co., serving for 12 years.

"In those days, you could work up through the organization, learning by experience," he said.

He later worked for People's Bank in Natchitoches, and then joined Winn State Bank in Winnfield, which became First Community Bank. First Community was acquired by Sabine State Bank 14 years ago, and Carl Stuckey remained with the organization until his retirement last month.

Carl takes pride in having been able to work with people in all walks of life, helping many to "get back on their feet" in personal and business financial situations.

He is married to the former Jo Nell Carter of Sibley in Webster Parish. Together and from former marriages, they have five children and six grandchildren. The Stuckeys attend Caney Lake Baptist Church, near their retreat in Jackson Parish, where they like to spend time, not far from his native haunts at Eros.
