Natural resources symposium reappearing
Once popular Southern event broadened to include range of resoource disciplines

The LSU AgCenter will host the Louisiana Natural Resources Symposium July 19-20 at the Lod Cook Conference Center and Hotel on the LSU Campus in Baton Rouge.

"For many years the University hosted the premiere forestry education event in the South, which was then known as the LSU Forestry Symposium," said LSU AgCenter associate professor Dr.Todd Shupe. "A recent resurgence of interest in renewing this symposium has led to its revival."

Shupe and LSU AgCenter economist Dr. Mike Dunn said the new symposium has a different title that is more contemporary and reflects the integration of all the natural resource disciplines.

"The topics and sessions of the symposium have been selected to include the broad array of natural resource policy, management, and utilization issues that are critically important in the Southeastern United States," Shupe said.

The symposium will feature papers from leading international experts covering cutting-edge issues such as BMP effectiveness and water-related issues, forest certification, estimation of forest carbon for large inventories, biomass use opportunities, new conservation programs, forest aesthetics, and much more, according to Shupe.

The target audience for the symposium includes land managers, foresters, academicians, and those interested in the management and conservation of natural resources.

The symposium is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest service Southern Research Station, LSU School of Renewable Natural Resources, Boise Cascade Corporation, Louisiana Society of American Foresters, National Wetlands Research Center, The Nature Conservancy, Natchitoches Parish Forest Landowners Association, Southern Regional Extension Forester, and Mockler Beverage Budweiser.
