| Tremont reunion is planed Former employees of the original Tremont Lumber Company operations in North Louisiana are planning a reunion of the company's ""alumni," in Winnfield around Labor Day weekend. A group met in Dodson last month to initiate plans for the reunion, and reminisced about the "old days." The organizer, Gene Turner of Winnfield, Mrs. C. C. (Roberts) Carter, both former employees, Mrs. J.C. Thompson, widow of a former long-time manager, and her son, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Thompson, of Jonesboro, formed the organizing committee which hopes to p;ut together an event to attract several hundred of the former employees and families. The reunion is tentatively planned to be held at the Forestry Building at the Winn Parish Fair Grounds in Winnfield. Anyone formerly employed from 1974 back to the beginning with Tremont Lumber Company, Tremont & Gulf Railroad, Tremont timber lands, or Tremont oil and gas operations, and their families, are invited to attend, said Turner. People having documents, photographs, or other articles of interest, or who would like to volunteer for work on the committee, are asked to contact Mr. or Mrs. Turner at 17 Pine Terrace, Winnfield 71483, or call 318-628-3094. For more recent arrivals in the North Louisiana area, the Tremont Lumber Company began operations around the turn of the last century in this area, and the mill site is the one currently operated by West Fraser South, Plum Creek, Manville, and Crown Zellerbach. The mill is located in the small community of Joyce, east of Winnfield, named for the founding Joyce family of Chicago. |
