Pine down, hardwood up in 2nd quarter Pine sawtimber stumpage prices were down, but mixed hardwood increased substantially during the second quarter of 2001. Average stumpage prices paid for pine sawtimber in Louisiana for the April-June quarter of 2001 was down by 9% from the same quarter of 2000, to $330.24 per thousand board feet (MBF) from $362.72, according to the second quarter report released in September by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry in Baton Rouge. The state market summary shows an increase of 1.4 percent for pine sawtimber stumpage over the first quarter of 2001. Prices paid for mixed hardwood sawtimber during the second quarter of 2001 averaged $265.16 MBF, 4.1 percent higher that the first quarter of 2001, and 13.9% higher than the same period in 2000. Pine sawtimber prices for second quarter 2001 were highest at $353.96 MBF, but lowest for mixed hardwood at $167.66 MBF, in Area 3, which covers western and central Louisiana, including and south of Sabine, Natchitoches, Winn, and LaSalle parishes, and west of and including Rapides, Evangeline, and Acadia parishes. Pine sawtimber prices were almost exactly even ar $311 MBF in areas 1, northeast Louisiana, and area 4, Florida parishes. Mixed hardwoods averaged $266.60 MBF in Area 1, and $293.59 in Area 4. Hardwoods were highest at $442.66 MBF in Area 3, the northeast Louisiana delta region. Pine pulpwood averaged $20.56 per cord statewide in second quarter 2001, down from $23.34 in second quarter 2000. Mixed hardwood pulpwood averaged $16.47 per cord statewide, up from $9.62 a year ago. Chip-N-Saw averaged $97.56 per cord, down from $108.46 a year ago. Pine OSB wafer board stock averaged $17.72, down from $23.63. Hardwood OSB averaged $15.88, with no quotes available from last year. |
